What is the hearing about? Bell, a telecommunication giant, has recently announced its plans to take over Astral Media, a leading Canadian media company.  The proposed takeover has raised many concerns such as, but not limited to, the effects of increased media concentration, increased vertical integration, or anti-competitive behavior.  The hearing will mainly focus upon two areas: (1) whether or not the deal should be approved and (2) support/opposition to Bell’s tangible benefits package.  Bell will start off the hearing on Day 1, and will be followed by Quebecor and Shaw.  The following days will involve groups and individuals both in support and in opposition to the takeover.  Procedurally, each party will be allowed ten minutes to present followed by Q&A from the Commission panel.  Bell will have a change to reply to all comments heard throughout the week at the end of Day 5, which will close the hearing.

Who Will Be There? Jean-Pierre Blais (new CRTC chair), Quebecor, Shar, CACTUS, Eastlink, Option Consommateurs, Communications Energy, Paperworkers Union, Rogers Telus, Cogeco, Ice Wireless, SSi, PIAC, Interveners, media and interested member of the public.

Additional Information: Hearings can be long events running from 9AM-5PM.  We will be staying for a few hours from 9-11AM; however, feel free to stay for as long or little as you wish! Visit stopthetakeover.ca to voice your opposition to the takeover. To view the full hearing agenda, go to http://www.crtc.ca and search “Bell Astral Hearing.”
